Qhaphela Gobodo’s story is one of resilience and determination. He was just a young boy when he made history as the first black kid to receive a rugby scholarship at his school.
But his journey took a devastating turn when his classmates, fueled by racism and hate, burnt him in a brutal attack that left him with severe injuries.
Fast forward to today, Qhaphela has undergone an incredible 20 surgeries, and despite it all, his love for rugby remains unbroken.
He’s a testament to the human spirit, refusing to let his past define him. But the scars, both physical and emotional, still linger. Lately, Qhaphela’s been struggling with depression, and it’s no surprise. Who wouldn’t be after what he’s been through?
One day, Qhaphela receives an unexpected visit from the rugby team he once inspired. They’re there to show their support, to remind him of the impact he’s had on their lives. As they gather around him, sharing stories and laughter, something shifts inside Qhaphela. He realizes he’s not alone, that his journey has inspired others, and that his love for rugby is still very much alive.
With renewed purpose, Qhaphela starts coaching a local rugby team, passing on his passion and experience to the next generation. He’s still got his struggles, but he’s learning to navigate them, one tackle at a time.
