A 7 year old Lathitha Mtolo was found murdered after disappearing on 26 February

A family’s desperate search for their 7-year-old daughter, Lathitha Mtolo, has been marred by police inaction, according to relatives.

Lathitha, a Grade 2 learner at Xoloxolo Primary, went missing on February 26 while playing with other children in Marikana, Kokstad.

A relative, Nokwanda Mtolo, said police released a suspect due to lack of evidence, despite the community finding a bloody shirt near a bridge, allegedly belonging to Lathitha.

The suspect reportedly confessed to abducting Lathitha and handing her over to two female traditional healers, who allegedly work with others to abduct and kill children.

The community, frustrated by police inaction, burnt down the suspect’s house and others.

Police are maintaining a presence in the area to ensure peace. Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit is continuing investigations and urged the community to report any information.

The family is pleading for help, saying they’re desperate for answers and justice. They’re questioning why the suspect was released and fear for Lathitha’s safety if she’s still alive.
